Descartes errata
Below is a list of errata for Descartes, in the series The Routledge Philosophers.
On p. 316 I provide a translation of an important sentence in Principles II.1, and I added the word ‘and’ in a way that makes the passage not make sense. The translation in the book is this, with the mistaken occurrence of ‘and’ in bold:
But because we have sensory awareness of, or as a result of sensory impact we have a clear and distinct perception of matter that is extended in length, breadth, and depth, whose various parts are endowed with various figures and are stirred by various motions, and furthermore they produce the various sensations we have of color, smell, pain, and so on: if God were himself immediately producing in our mind the idea of such extended matter, or even if he were causing the idea to be produced by something which lacked extension, shape and motion, there would be no way of avoiding the conclusion that he is a deceiver.
The following is the amended translation:
But since we have sensory awareness of, or as a result of sensory impact we have a clear and distinct perception of matter that is extended in length, breadth, and depth, whose various parts are endowed with various figures and are stirred by various motions, they also furthermore produce the various sensations we have of color, smell, pain, and so on: if God were himself immediately producing in our mind the idea of such extended matter, or even if he were causing the idea to be produced by something which lacked extension, shape and motion, there would be no way of avoiding the conclusion that he is a deceiver.
With this translation, Descartes is first indicating that the concept of body tells us that body is extended in length, breadth, and depth, and then he is concluding that body has an additional characteristic that is not included in its concept: it produces our sensations of color, smell, pain, and the like. We know that body has this additional characteristic because we have a clear and distinct perception of body upon having a sensory perception and because God would be a deceiver if we had that clear and distinct perception and body did not exist.
